Airrex7 Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Due to wear I need to replace all four tyres on my Galaxy. Fitted at the moment are Goodyear Continentals 215/55/R16/ 95H Radial Reinforced. I went to this site here and found under the Wanli brand, 1063 97W XL or 1099 XL 97W. They appear good value, mail order budgets the former being Quote
insider Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Check here - http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...st&p=117281. Perhaps bigkev coudl update us on his experience with them?XL and RF mean the same thing and you must have these on the Galaxy.95 and 97 is the load rating and must be at least 95.The speed rating must be at least H so V and W are OK but some people have suggested that higher speed rated tyres wear out quicker. No need to inform your insurance company as long as you have 95H as a minimum. davewill Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 I need two new tyres on the front of my Gal (Mk11) Currently have Dunlop SP Sports but these have worn after about 12,000 miles As current financials does not really stretch to Quote
Airrex7 Posted February 6, 2008 Author Report Posted February 6, 2008 Hello Dave, Insider, Thanks for the replies, information and links. Insider, thank you, very informative. Dave, those are the exact tyres I was looking to fit but just discovered that the S in the product code stands for Summer. I have been told that Summer/Winter ratings are for US roads and it doesn't matter if we fit Summer/Winter rated tyres here in the UK, does it make any difference to wear or performance? Is there any truth in this or was I been given sales BS? Quote
Airrex7 Posted February 6, 2008 Author Report Posted February 6, 2008 Hello Dave, I have ordered 4 x Wanli S 1099 XL 97 W. I have been told categorically the S does not stand for Summer. Quote
davewill Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Airrex It will be interesting to compare our thoughts on these tyres after next week I will have two on the front and you all 4 "boots" Hopefully "Value for Money" will mean just that, and not cheap and shoddy We wait and see! :) Quote
paul2468 Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 Hi. In response to your query about the Wanli tyres. We have fitted lots of these tyres for customers and sold them as a budget tyre.We have never had any complaints about the handling or wear life. I have a Galaxy myself and wouldnt hesitate fitting these tyres on my own car. Quote
davewill Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 Thanks for the info Paul, it sounds promising  Quote
Airrex7 Posted February 7, 2008 Author Report Posted February 7, 2008 Hi Paul and thanks. What is a reasonable average life for these tyres, mixture of road and motorway, remembering these are W rated and not H so may wear quicker, can you say? Also we have a lot of speed humps around our way, I don't think there is a problem but should I have the tracking inspected /done when replacing tyres, mine is an 03, 2.3 Galaxy. Quote
Manxman Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 I have used Wanli directional tyres on both front and rear on my Galaxy and would not recommend them . When new they are very good both in the wet and the dry but soon develop a lot of road noise which many would suggest is a wheel bearing sound.. I now use Firestone Firehawk and find they are very quiet with excellent mileage compared to budget tyres. Also expect more mpg due to the better free rolling on the Firestones. Quote
sparky Paul Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 (edited) Also we have a lot of speed humps around our way, I don't think there is a problem but should I have the tracking inspected /done when replacing tyres, mine is an 03, 2.3 Galaxy. Any evidence of edge feathering on your old tyres? If not, don't bother. The best thing you can do if keep a regular eye on them and get the tracking adjusted at the first sign of any trouble. When it comes to budget tyres, I would look around the 'net to see what folks experience is of the tyre you are looking at. Read the reviews. Then try them - if you don't like them, try something else, and don't forget to warn us on here... I haven't found the wear rates on budget tyres any different to be honest, and although it is a fact that some tyres have less rolling resistance and hence improve your mpg, the effect is relatively small. Rusty Nail Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 I have been looking at the 'FULLRN' tyres MO4 has been championing. The reviews look OK tp me and I am looking at getting a couple for the front in the next few weeks. I will be replacing a pair of AVON ZV3's which have managed 12k, just. I shall let all know what I think when I get them fitted. Quote
wow Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 am looking a bit of advice here I have a 2007 1.8 galaxy(new model) 13500 miles and the front tyres are on the level indicators. They are worn unevenly mostly in the middle The pressure in front are 38 (3 over recommended) the tyres are Good Year excellence. The dealer tells me all is ok with brakes etc and that wear is due to the weight of the vehicle-i,m a bit surprised as to wear at this mileage. I do tow a small caravan 6 or 7 times a year 200 miles per journey ant thoughts thanks Quote
insider Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 13,500 miles is not too bad, many achieve much less.If you have inflated your tyres above the recommended pressure then that's why they are worn more in the middle than the edges. (Underinflated tyres will wear more on the edges than the centre). Stick to the recommended tyre pressures! Quote
Ex-Galaxy person Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 On tyre pressures - I noticed that the pressures given in the handbook were lower than those given on the label on the driver's door pillar. I stick to the higher value as the handling/steering felt better. Anyone else noticed this difference? BTW - Currently running Dunlops as recommended, but not sure I'll use them again as they were quite pricey. Quote

If you over-inflate, steering will feel a little lighter, but your tyres will wear in the middle. In theory, grip will be affected too as there won't be an even pressure exerted over the width of the tyre. In general, you should stick to the pressures on the sticker on the car door pillar/fuel filler flap - unless the wheel/tyre type has been changed at any point. However, bear in mind that these are only a guide, you may find you need to adjust either way by a psi or two... keep an eye on tyre wear. Quote

Airrex7 Posted February 11, 2008 Author Report Posted February 11, 2008 (edited) All four Wanli tyres have just arrived by mail order, a day early in fact. They look OK, any point of me taking a photo for the forums here? Edited February 11, 2008 by Airrex7 Quote
davewill Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 Had my two front tyres replaced with the Wanli's yesterday Fitter says they sell a lot of them, but then says you probably won't get more than 12,000 miles out of them So what i say, i didn't get more than 12,000 out of the Dunlops and they cost twice the price! First impressions are OK, probably a bit more road noise than the Dunlops but nothing too excessive Steering also feels a little lighter, although they did adjust the tracking at the garage, as this was out of line Will be doing a long journey at the weekend, so will get better feel of the tyres then Quote
Airrex7 Posted February 13, 2008 Author Report Posted February 13, 2008 I too had all four tyres replaced with the Wanlis today, clearly the alignment of the wheels were way out because of the wear on three of the tyres, the rear offside was in good nick, so I've kept that as a spare. For Quote
